We really hope that you take this opportunity to become more confident with your understanding of what racism is and why it is important to be anti-racist. But if you have any questions you can submit them here. We will answer your anonymous questions on the learning resources page. |
Tiffany Jewell, an anti-racism expert says; some may tell you you're too young to talk about race. People may tell you that you should stop talking about skin colour and see everyone as a 'global citizen'. You may have been told racism isn't a problem any more and that calling it out or bringing it up is wrong.
Some people may have given you the impression that you are wrong and stirring up trouble. You are not! Racism is a problem, a very serious problem, and it needs to be talked about because it isn't going away if we do nothing. It is okay for you to continue to ask questions about racism. It is okay for you to not have all the answers about racism. It is okay for you to make mistakes as you are learning about the complex issues surrounding race and racism. But we don't believe it is okay, to know about injustice, see injustice, and simply hope it goes away. We want to be part of the solution to injustice.
There are many moments to pause throughout this week and think about how you can grow as a person who is committed to being anti-racist.
Through this week, we will explore what anti-racism means, and how to be part of this positive change to make the world a better place.
What is anti-racism?
An anti-racist person is someone who is actively opposed to racism. Anti-racism is actively working against racism. It is making a commitment to resisting unjust laws, policies and racist attitudes. Anti-racism is how we get free from centuries of living in a racialized society that keeps us separate and oppressed.
Some people believe that solving racism is not their responsibility. That so long as they are kind and respectful to all people, they are not contributing to the problem. An anti-racist person believes that simply not being racist is not enough. An anti-racist person will seek to actively solve racism by speaking up when they see or hear racism. They will not witness racism and do nothing because they know inaction does nothing to end discrimination.
To be an anti-racist person, you must believe that all people are equal and deserve to be treated as such. No one should be treated poorly because of the colour of their skin, the texture of their hair the shape of their nose, their accent, their nationality or their heritage. No one should be treated poorly, because of their gender, their sexuality, their disabilities, their age or their financial status and many other reasons.
These things happen every single day. And it is cruel and inhumane. No person deserves to be treated as if they are less than any other person.
For this reason throughout this week, you will be learning more about injustice, more about each other and more about yourself.
